Children's Parliament

The Children's Parliament is part of Riihimäki's Child-Friendly Municipality.

The goal of the Children's Parliament's activities is to increase the participation and influence of Riihimäkeli children in matters concerning children. As a rule, the issues discussed in the children's parliament come from the children themselves, and they also act as presenters of the issues.

Every elementary school represented

The parliament has a total of 28 members, four students from each elementary school in Riihimäki. Members are elected annually from the schools. The Children's Parliament meets 2–3 times during the school year.

In addition to the children, the mayor, the chairman of the city council or board, other decision-makers and office holders, as well as guiding teachers, participate in the parliament's sessions. A few tutors from the youth council are appointed to the Parliament for each meeting.

Friendship, school food and culture

The next meeting of the Children's Parliament is on Wednesday, May 15. Topics include, among others, the prevention of bullying, the initial ideation of playgrounds to be renovated in the coming years, and the distribution of certificates.

At the meeting on March 6, 2024, the Children's Parliament discussed, among other things, a safe school environment and children's experiences of Riihimäki's child-friendliness and its development at the youth center Monar.

In the spring of 2023, the Children's Parliament dealt with increasing friendships, the city's ethical program and increasing inclusion. The themes of the autumn gathering were school food and culture.
