Children's Parliament

The Children's Parliament is part of the Riihimäki Child-Friendly Municipality initiative. The fourth term of the Children's Parliament has begun in Riihimäki, with membership from autumn 2025 to spring 2026.

The Children's Parliament will next meet on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at the Monari Youth Center.

The aim of the Children's Parliament is to increase the participation and influence of children in Riihimäki. School student unions discuss and bring topics to the Children's Parliament.

Every elementary school is represented

The parliament has a total of 28 members, four students from each elementary school in Riihimäki. Members are elected annually from the schools. The Children's Parliament meets 2–3 times during the school year.

In addition to the children, the mayor, the chairman of the city council or board, other decision-makers and office holders, as well as guiding teachers, participate in the parliament's sessions. A few tutors from the youth council are appointed to the Parliament for each meeting.

Friendship, school food and culture

Over the years, the topics discussed in the Children's Parliament have included, among others, bullying prevention, increasing friendships, the city's ethics program, initial ideas for playgrounds to be renovated in the coming years, safe school trips, and children's experiences of Riihimäki's child-friendliness and its development.
