Cultural trail

Welcome to Riihimäki's Culture Path.

The cultural path fulfills the child's right to art and culture. According to the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to cultural experiences and self-expression. Every year, every child from Riihimäkä receives a diverse range of art and cultural experiences from the cultural path. The cultural path supports the goals of the curriculum.

  • The cultural path is aimed at all children and young people covered by the city's early childhood education and basic education services. The cultural path of the high school and vocational schools will be planned at a later stage.

    Riihimäki's Cultural Trail includes all local cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and theaters. In addition to them, the offer is supplemented with the contents of other public and private cultural operators, so that visitors can get to know as wide a variety of art forms as possible. The cultural path also contains a large number of self-help materials and loanable materials that teachers can use as part of their own teaching.

    Cultural path destinations are divided by age groups in early childhood education and by classes in basic education. Every year, there is at least one cultural trail visit for each group. Visiting times at the cultural trail destinations are flexible and are arranged according to the instructions in the Cultural Trail brochures. The times of guest performances, on the other hand, are agreed in advance for certain days and it is not possible to change them during the school year.

  • Cultural trail is a tray of cultural experiences that is updated annually and targeted by age group. The cultural trail is presented on the city's website as a separate entity. The website has a list of all the places to visit with their contact persons, divided by age group.

    Cultural trail destinations are cultural and art institutions operating in the city, where guided tours, performances or workshops are available for kindergarten and school groups. The visit can also take place in the kindergarten or school's own premises, in which case the cultural worker will hold a performance or workshop in a suitable group space.

    Cultural liaisons are a link in the cooperation between schools and places to visit. Appointed cultural liaisons in daycare centers and schools convey information about children's cultural offerings, take care of registrations, give feedback to activity organizers and participate in the development of children's cultural programs from the point of view of an educational professional.

    1. ARX, the cultural center for children and young people, and cultural services of the city of Riihimäki prepare cultural trail destinations and visits by cultural actors with a working group made up of cultural liaisons. The contents of the cultural path may vary annually within the limits of the budget. All museums in the city offer the service free of charge, with other art institutions and cultural operators, child or group-specific prices are agreed in advance.     2. Cultural trail destinations and visits by cultural operators and their contents are presented in the Cultural Trail brochures, which have been delivered to kindergartens and schools. The cultural trail is free for participants. The costs are covered by a grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the appropriations for early childhood education and basic education.     3. The teacher of the kindergarten or school group contacts the visit destination assigned to the age group and agrees the visit time according to the instructions in the Kulttuuripolku brochure. If the age group has a targeted visit in their own space, the school's cultural contact person will arrange the times with the visiting cultural actor.
    4. The teacher plans the group's transition to the destination. Groups can move on foot, by bike or by bus. Public transport is free for kindergarten and school groups.
    5. At the time of the visit, a representative of the cultural and art institutions receives the group and presents the content of the visit and related workshops or other tasks. The teacher is responsible for the order and safety of his group during trips and visits.

  • 1–3 year olds: Dance workshops

    Dance workshops aimed at the little ones in daycare centers tour the daycare centers during the fall. In the children's dance workshop, dancing is done in a playful way, utilizing different elements of dance. The goal of the workshop is to create a nice dance moment together, the ideas of which can be used in the day-to-day life of the kindergarten later on. The children are danced by Etelä-Häme Tanssiopisto.

    4–5 year olds: Music performance

    Riihimäki Music College takes 4-5 year olds on a musical adventure with Kaarlo Käärmee. Performance Towards the city, Kaarlo Käärme! -visits kindergartens during the academic year 2024–25.

    Kaarlo Käärme is bored with the wildness of the jungle and goes to find a new place to live. Suddenly, a strange box on wheels whizzes by in front of Kaarlo, holding a terrible mecca! WOW! What exactly was that? Where exactly is Kaarlo Käärme going?

    Towards the city, Kaarlo Käärme! -in addition to the early childhood music teacher, 2–3 musicians perform in the musical adventure. Performers bring their own instruments and necessary props with them. The venue for the performance is, for example, a kindergarten hall, where children can sit on the floor and they can participate in the activity from their own place, e.g. standing/squatting. The duration of the performance is approx. 30 minutes.

    The Riemu City Museum Cultural Trail visits will be organized for senior citizens in the fall of 2024 (November 4–29, 2024) and in the spring of 2025 (March 3–28, 2025) at the Riemu Museum Center, which includes the Riihimäki City Museum and the Riihimäki Art Museum.

    The functional guided tours included in the Cultural Path are related to the joint exhibition of the City Museum and the Art Museum, The Story of a Chair (October 12, 2024 – April 20, 2025), which is on display at the Riemu Museum Center.

    The exhibition guides the viewer through centuries and history, presenting chairs, objects, art and cultural history. The exhibition is made of chairs, antiques and paintings from the collections of the Riihimäki Art Museum and the city museum. The Chair Story exhibition has been supplemented with chairs from other museums' collections and private collections, as well as other exhibition material.
    The exhibition is toured under the guidance of a guide, after which the eskars have a task related to the exhibition. Duration about 45-60 min.

    Library visit

    First-time library visit for Eskares eskares get to get to know the services of the Riihimäki city library on a playful tour. Tours are organized throughout the school year. The first session includes a library tour, library card and borrowing instructions, a small fairy tale, a book presentation, and finally we borrow nice books to take with us to the eskar.     2nd grade: Theater visit

    Riihimäki's 2nd graders get to watch Riihimäki's youth theater's fantasy play MOMO. Momo lives in a world where no one has time for friends or adventures. Time thieves trick the townspeople into saving their last bit of time in the time bank, causing people to become gloomy and gray. With her superpower of listening, Momo and her friends try to stop the time thieves' plot. The imaginative stage play Momo is based on the novel written by Michael Ende.

    The venue is Kino Sampo. After the performance, there is an opportunity to meet the characters of the play briefly. Duration of the performance approx. 50 min.

    3rd grade: Traditional culture and literature

    Independence Day celebration

    The city of Riihimäki invites all 3rd graders to celebrate Independence Day at the beginning of December. At the party, you get to know the traditional culture and enjoy food and musical performances. The party starts with the party guests shaking hands. Teachers will be informed about the details of the celebration during the fall semester.

    Book tip

    3rd graders get energy for reading from a visit to the library. The main library teaches how to use the library and gives advice on current and age-appropriate books. The duration of the content is 2x45 min. The books are suggested interactively and the order of the books between the shelves is learned with the help of small tasks. And finally, we borrow books.

    4th grade: Visit to the Hunting Museum

    In the Finnish Hunting Museum, you can find out how Finland was settled and how animals affected people's lives in post-Ice Age Finland. We get to know the food chain and some forest animals, such as elk and bear, and their lifestyles. During the visit, the quadruplets also get to practice their own manual skills. The duration of the visit is about 45 minutes.

    5th grade: Theater and drama

    Theater makers workshop and play

    In autumn, 5th graders (one grade at a time) can visit Riihimäki Theater, where the Theater Makers workshop (duration 45 min.) Riihimäki Teatteri is responsible for running the functional workshop. In the functional workshop, the children get to experience the challenges of the theater's "behind-the-stage professions" in an imaginary performance situation and participate in the theater makers quiz. The group is split in two at the theater, so it's great if the school counselor/another adult can also visit. We will ask about this during registration.

    In February 2025, the same classes will see a performance at Kino Sampoo, whose name and performance times will be specified by the end of October 2024.

    Workshops for special education small classes

    Small groups in need of special education receive their own Kulttuuripoltu content, if necessary. Small groups can participate in the content of other age groups or in their own workshop.

    1.-9. lk Concert for every school

    In the academic year 2024-25, Riihimäki elementary school students can attend all the concerts of the Concert for Every School tour. The artist of the concerts taking place in the beginning of 2025 is Dhamal World Collective.

    Bursting rhythms, mystical melodies, the pulse of folk music from Northern India and Ostrobothnia. The amazing musicians Charlotta Kerbs (Finland) and Sanjay Khan (India), aka Dhamal World Collective, combine the music of their own cultures into a fascinating and colorful world.

    Bursting with joy and friendship, this multicultural show plays with languages ​​and rhythms, taking the listener into an experience never experienced before. During the holiday of singing and playing, we get to know Indian musical instruments, such as tablas, kartal, tanpura and harmonium.

  • Welcome to the Kulttuuripolu for middle school students! 6.–9. of the city of Riihimäki. The Cultural Path of the classes includes workshops and visits to art institutions.

    6th grade: Time trip to the history of glass

    The Finnish Museum of Glass is the national museum responsible for glass, which presents the past and present of glass. In the learning tour, we will familiarize ourselves with everyday glass as a material, its history and production, as well as various uses in the museum's basic exhibition. After a short guidance, the students get to do assignments and tour the museum on their own.

    7th grade: Machine music workshop

    In the machine workshop, you will get to know the principles of electronic music production and various music genres. The goal is to master sequencing and learn to use it in producing your own music. Editing and filtering of sounds are also taught in the workshops. The workshop is directed by ARX's art educator Viljami Tabell.

    8th grade: Art testers and genre advice

    Art testers

    Finland's largest cultural education program, Art Testers, offers all Finnish eighth graders and their teachers 2 art visits again next school year. The goal is to offer young people unforgettable art experiences and tools to form a well-founded opinion about the experience.     The program is coordinated by the Federation of Finnish Children's Cultural Centers and financed by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Svenska kulturfonden. Like every year, 100% of the 8th graders are participating.

    According to their own choice, the schools are taken either to two nearby destinations or for one visit to the surrounding area and another visit to the capital region. Next year, the nearby destinations in Kanta-Häme are: Hämeenlinna Art Museum, Voipaala Art Center and Race Horse Company's performance at Hämeenlinna Verkatehta.

    Genre hint

    In eighth-grade genre advice, from familiarity to detective stories as well as love, suspense, horror, sci-fi and fantasy literature. Finally, students borrow a book that interests them.

    9th grade: Theater and procedural drama

    Process drama workshop

    In addition to the performance, students are also offered a process drama workshop by class during the school year, where we zoom in on selected themes through the young people's own participation, thinking and feelings. The workshops are held in October-December at RNT's teaching facilities in Majaka.
