The people of Riihimäki colored the urban space with street art
The distribution cabinets located in the area of the center of Riihimäki have been painted in the Boxit street art project in the summer of 2021. The project wanted to involve townspeople of different ages in coloring the streetscape of Riihimäki and bring out the diversity of street art. Riihimäki city's cultural services, Canstore and Caruna were responsible for the implementation of the project.
Participation in the Boxit project search was open to everyone. The painting subject and technique were free, a good idea was the most important! A total of 96 great work proposals were received, and 38 of them were chosen to be implemented at this stage. The project offered the artists painting guidance and painting supplies suitable for the works, which were supplied by Canstore. A contract was made for the painting work and a fee was paid for the work.
The colorful distribution cabinets have received an enthusiastic reception. The townspeople are proud of their town's skilled painters. The project was also successful from the point of view of the partners, i.e. Canstore and Caruna.
The continuation of the switchboard paintings was included in the proposals of the 2021 participatory budgeting, from which the townspeople voted to implement it. The painting of distribution cabinets continued in the summer of 2022 along the entrance routes to the city. 10 distribution cabinets were painted with OSBU funds. The painters were selected based on the Boxit project proposals.
Boxit maps
To the Boxit gallery all 2021 distribution cabinets painted in 38 have been collected for virtual viewing. In the gallery you can find photos of the cabinets and the name or nickname of the painter of each cabinet. The gallery pictures are numbered and located on the map.
The distribution cabinets painted in the official BOXIT orientation maps prepared by the Riihimäki suunnintajat ry are fixed grids. The orientation map encourages you to get to know the works on site in the urban landscape. There are three orientation maps: BOXIT North, BOXIT South and BOXIT East. You can print the maps or download them to your mobile phone.
