Swimming water quality control

Environmental health care monitors the water quality and safety of public beaches and swimming pools intended for public use under the Health Protection Act. You must notify the municipality's health protection authority about the establishment of a new public beach or swimming pool intended for public use.

A public beach is a beach that is offered to the public by the beach administrator. The administrator is responsible, among other things, for the cleanliness and safety of the beach. The beach, which is used for recreation based on the right of every man, is not a public beach. Also, private Beaches intended only for the use of a certain community are not public beaches.

  • Public swimming beaches are divided based on the estimated number of visitors into public swimming beaches, i.e. so-called EU swimming beaches and small public swimming beaches. Beaches that are estimated to be frequented by a significant number of swimmers are classified as public beaches. Small public swimming beaches are not estimated to have a significant number of swimmers.

There are a total of 46 swimming beaches in the environmental health monitoring area of Etelä-Häme, the water quality of which we monitor during the swimming season from June 15.6 to August 31.8. during.

We take at least 3–4 swimming water samples from the beaches in the summer, depending on the estimated number of visitors to the beach. In swimming water, we study the concentrations of bacteria that describe the possibility of pathogens that may be present in the water. In addition, we assessed the presence of cyanobacteria, i.e. blue-green algae, and waste in the swimming water using a sensorial approach. The sample results can be seen on the bulletin boards of the swimming beaches and on this page. If the action limit of the sample result is exceeded, we will take a repeat sample and assess the potential health hazard.

The action limits for sample results of inland bathing waters are:

    • enterococci of intestinal origin 400 pmy /100 ml and
    • Escherichia coli 1 cfu / 000 ml.

If blue-green algae is found on the beach, we take a leaflet to the beach, which tells about the health hazards of blue-green algae and gives instructions to swimmers. If necessary, we can order the operator of the beach to take remedial measures and prohibit swimming at the beach.

We also carry out inspections of the beaches in accordance with the control plan, where we monitor, among other things, the condition of the structures, the cleanliness of the beach and waste management.

  • Bathing water profiles have been drawn up for public swimming beaches (EU swimming beaches), which collect information about the beach, the quality of the bathing water and the factors affecting the quality of the bathing water.

The evaluation of the bathing water quality of EU beaches is based on the long-term monitoring of bathing water quality in addition to the results of individual monitoring studies. On the basis of long-term monitoring, a bathing water class is calculated for the EU swimming beach at the end of the swimming season, based on the monitoring survey results of the previous four swimming seasons. There are four categories of swimming water: excellent, good, satisfactory and poor.

  • Blue-green algae occurs naturally in all water bodies. Blue-green algae usually appear in the water as small greenish clumps. Streaks of algae can also drift onto the shores or green algae rafts can form in the water. Blue-green algae cannot be lifted with a stick, like filamentous green algae. Another way to identify blue-green algae is to take water containing algae in a glass and let it stand for an hour. The algae is probably blue-green algae if green particles rise to the surface of the water.

Some blue-green algae are toxic. Since toxic blue-green algae cannot be visually distinguished from non-toxic ones, treat all blue-green algae with caution. Do not swallow or use brackish water as washing or bathing water. Avoid swimming, and don't let children or domestic animals to the beach when blue-green algae has been detected in the water.

Blue-green algae toxins can cause various general symptoms, such as nausea, fever, skin redness and itching, or eye and nose symptoms. Symptoms usually appear within a few hours of exposure to blue-green algae. If symptoms occur, wash the skin and eyes carefully with plenty of clean water and consult a doctor if necessary.

We monitor the blue-green algae situation at the beaches during sampling and inspection visits. If blue-green algae is found on the beach, we take a leaflet to the beach, which tells about the health hazards of blue-green algae and gives instructions to swimmers. However, the blue-green algae situation can change very quickly depending on the weather conditions, so swimming should always be judged according to the current situation.

You can report blue-green algae observations to environmental health at ytos@riihimaki.fi. You can also report your observations In the Vesi.fi map service or In the lake-sea wiki.

If necessary, we advise on matters related to the quality of swimming waters.

  • We monitor the water quality of swimming pools and spas as well as other public pools with regularly taken pool water samples, which we use to ensure that the pool water meets the quality requirements set for it. In addition, we carry out inspections in accordance with the control plan, where we monitor, among other things, the cleanliness and hygiene of the premises.

If the pool water does not meet the quality requirements set for it and the water may cause harm to health, we make sure that the operator of the facility corrects the situation without delay. If necessary, we can also prohibit the use of the pool.

Hot tubs and hot tubs for rent, as well as pools for housing companies' own use, do not fall under the scope of the pool water regulation. The administrator of these pools has a special responsibility for the pool's hygiene and water quality.

If necessary, we advise on issues related to pool water quality.
