Veterinary services and animal protection

Environmental health care in Etelä Häme manages the municipal veterinary services in the municipality of Riihimäki and Forssa, as well as in the municipalities of Janakkala, Hausjärvi, Loppi, Tammela, Jokioinen, Humppila and Ypäjä. The veterinary clinics are located in Jokioin and Riihimäki.

Veterinary medicine is responsible

  • on the health and medical care of farm and pet animals,
  • on work to combat and prevent animal diseases,
  • duties according to the Animal Protection Act and
  • on the health control of animal husbandry, which is related to the control of foodstuffs obtained from animals.

In addition to the fee charged by the veterinarian, the municipal corporation collects a clinic fee from the animal's owner or keeper when the animal is seen at the municipal association's reception. The clinic fee covers the costs arising from the rent and equipment of the reception, the assistant and other similar costs. The fee is per patient, i.e. if the same owner has several animals with him at the same visit, the clinic fee according to the classification is charged for each patient treated.

Fees

  • Clinic and equipment fees are per animal.

    No clinic fee is charged

    • Care of wild animals, guide dogs, police dogs and the like.

    Clinic fee 8,00 euros (including VAT 25,5%)

    • Basic procedure less than 15 minutes.
    • For example, vaccination, a simple basic clinical examination, treatment and euthanasia of birds and small rodents, export certificate, passport, microchipping or a puppy check-up for an individual puppy.

    Clinic fee 16,00 euros (including VAT 25,5%)

    • Basic procedure 15 – 30 minutes.
    • For example, suturing a small wound, catheterization, castration or sterilization of a cat, removal of minor tartar, nail trimming under anesthesia, mild eye, ear, or skin infections, blood and scrape sampling, ultrasound pregnancy check, euthanasia of a cat, dog, or rabbit.

    Clinic fee 32,00 euros (including VAT 25,5%)

    • More demanding procedure over 30 minutes.
    • For example, castration and sterilization of dogs and other surgeries, assisted childbirth, removal of excessive tartar, skin and internal organ diseases that require demanding or time-consuming procedures (for example, IV hydration, large, festering wounds, shaving hair or stubble from a large area).

    Clinic fee 50,00 euros (including VAT 25,5%)

    • Regardless of the procedure, always during emergency hours.

    Other payments

    • Equipment fees are charged for the use of city-owned equipment. These are calculated based on the equipment's purchase price and estimated useful life.
    • For procedures outside of the basic procedures, an hourly supplementary service fee will be charged in addition to the clinic fee. 70,00 euros per hour.
    • Additional fee for non-residents: EUR 50,00 (includes VAT 25,5%).
      This fee is not charged to emergency patients or to stray animal operators who take care of stray animals recovered from the South Häme Environmental Health Area.

     

  • The Veterinary Services Act distinguishes between basic services and supplementary services. Municipalities must provide the necessary basic services. Supplementary services may be provided, but their pricing must be market-based.

    Measures included in basic services

    • general examination and health assessment to verify the health of the animals
    • identification marking for cats and dogs
    • animal health visits as provided for in Article 25 of Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and of the Council on transmissible animal diseases and amending and repealing certain legislation in the field of animal health (‘Animal Health Code’), as well as health visits and health plans on holdings of food-producing animals
    • vaccination
    • measures related to the removal and prevention of parasites
    • essential basic oral health care procedures or, if appropriate considering the scope or complexity of the procedure, referral for further treatment
    • removal of horns and horn motifs from cattle and goats
    • reproductive examinations and studies and treatment of reproductive problems in cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and reindeer kept for food production
    • castration for cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, reindeer, dogs and cats, as well as sterilization for cats
    • clinical examination of a sick animal and assessment of the need for treatment, taking routine samples and rapid testing or submitting them for laboratory tests to determine the cause of the animal's illness, and, if necessary, sending the animal for further tests
    • necessary treatment for a sick animal kept for food or fur production, which can be provided on the animal's premises and which also includes a gastric bypass operation for a bovine animal
    • basic first aid treatment required for an animal other than those referred to in point 11, including conservative treatment of digestive and urinary tract disorders, treatment of inflammatory and painful conditions, treatment of shock, treatment of metabolic disorders, suturing of wounds, other similar treatment involving no more than minor surgical procedures, immobilization of bone fractures in the most common small domestic animals, and necessary further treatment or medication related to the treatment and, if necessary, sending the animal for further treatment
    • obstetric care, including caesarean sections for cattle, sheep, goats and cats
    • animal euthanasia

    Complementary services offered by South Häme Veterinary Care

    • imaging studies in situations where appropriate examination and treatment of a sick animal requires it
    • surgical treatment in life-threatening situations
    • dog sterilization surgery
    • basic treatment of diseases, e.g. including minor surgical procedures, also for animals other than farm animals
    • care for a pet of an owner from another locality in non-urgent cases

    For procedures outside of the basic procedures, an hourly supplementary service fee will be charged in addition to the clinic fee.

    • The additional fee is 70,00 euros per hour (including VAT 25,5%).
    • For example, a caesarean section or hysterectomy for a dog, or sterilization of a dog (approximately 1,5 hours or 105,00 euros).
    • Follow-up injection (monthly injections): EUR 5,00 (including VAT 25,5%). There is no separate clinic fee for follow-up injections.
    • Additional fee for non-residents: EUR 50,00 (including VAT 25,5%).
      This fee is not charged to emergency patients or to stray animal operators who take care of stray animals recovered from the South Häme Environmental Health Area.
