Youth council

To ensure opportunities for young people to participate and have influence, the municipal government must establish a youth council or a similar youth influence group (youth council) and ensure its operating conditions.

A youth council can also be shared by several municipalities.

The youth council must be given the opportunity to influence the planning, preparation, implementation and monitoring of the activities of various departments of the municipality in matters that are of significance to the well-being, health, studies, living environment, housing or mobility of the municipality's residents, as well as in other matters that the youth council assesses to be significant for children and young people. The youth council must be involved in developing the participation and consultation of children and young people in the municipality. (Municipalities Act, Section 26.)

You are welcome to follow our meetings! However, we hope that you will inform the chairperson of the youth council or the youth services employee responsible for the youth council's activities in advance of your results.

The new youth council will begin its operations with an organizational meeting (exceptionally) on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at 6:00 PM.

The meetings will be held, at least for the time being, in the conference room Asema, Eteläinen Asemakatu 2.

The participation and consultation of children and young people is regulated in section 6 of the Youth Act.

    • Respect the other person's personal physical and mental space.
    • Respect self-determination. Don't touch someone without asking permission. Remember that you can't know someone's boundaries without asking them. Ask for space for yourself if you need it.
    • Do not mock, ridicule, belittle, marginalize, or embarrass anyone through your words, behavior, or actions. Refrain from judging appearance, gossiping, or perpetuating stereotypes.
    • Don't make assumptions based on appearance or actions. Don't make assumptions about someone's sexuality, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion.
    • Give space. Let's work together to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the activities of the youth council. Also, respect the privacy of others and handle sensitive topics respectfully.
    • Listen and learn. Accept new topics, people, and perspectives with an open mind. Treat every issue and situation as an opportunity to learn and develop.
    • Apologize if you have intentionally or unintentionally offended others.

The principles were approved at the youth council meeting on 18.11.2024 November XNUMX
