A people-oriented and appreciative meeting place

  • The area of responsibility for welfare services consists of youth services, library services, and open welfare and health promotion services. Open welfare services include four focus areas:

    • meeting place activities in Riksula
    • Meeting place activities as local activities and in summer Senior Parks
    • volunteer work
    • Outreach work for the elderly

Open welfare services carry out a variety of encounter and senior work, work that promotes the well-being and health of city residents, and provide facilities for association and organizational activities. Riksula, summer senior parks, and Peltosaari local activities at Peltsin Clubi 2.0 serve as meeting places.

Outreach work for the elderly reaches out to elderly city residents who are at risk of exclusion. Volunteering offers the opportunity to participate in low-threshold tasks for the benefit of city residents.

The area of responsibility for welfare services emphasizes preventive activities, the promotion of well-being and health, and inclusion. The need for encounters is growing.

Well-being and health belong to all of us

Small everyday actions, such as exercise, healthy eating and adequate rest, strengthen well-being and significantly improve our quality of life. Promoting well-being and health creates the foundation for functional capacity:

    • narrowing the gaps in well-being and health between population groups
    • promote and maintain well-being, health, safety and inclusion
    • strengthens mental health and prevents the harm of substance abuse
    • prevents diseases, accidents, violence, exclusion and exclusion

Open welfare services are a service package in the education and welfare sector.

  • Riksula's mission is to be a people-oriented, equal and respectful meeting place, where the participants create activities that are seen by the city's residents in a creative, respectful and well-being-enhancing way. Riksula works in collaboration with organizations, associations, educational institutions, Oma Häme, the Kotokartanosaätiö and the City of Riihimäki actors.

The meeting place activity is open to everyone and free of charge, a low-threshold activity that provides a safe environment for togetherness and participation. The activity supports individual well-being and strengthens social inclusion in an accessible way in the middle of the city, close to services.

    From an individual's perspective

    • Prevents loneliness and increases social contacts.
    • Offers a safe and free space where you can be yourself.
    • Create everyday rhythm, meaning, and meaningful activities.
    • Enables learning, peer support, and trying out new skills.

    From a societal perspective

    • Acts as preventive welfare work, reducing exclusion and the need for heavy services.
    • Increases community, trust and a sense of security in the area.
    • Provides a space for participation, influence and civic engagement.
    • Supports cooperation between the municipality, organizations and volunteers.
  • You are welcome just as you are. Participation in supervised activities is voluntary and you can drop by Riksula whenever it suits you. There is always company over a cup of coffee or a game of cards. Townspeople can suggest activities they like to do at Riksula. Are you keen to lead chair exercises for seniors? Do you enjoy doing crafts and handicrafts together with others? Can you sing along to community songs? There is an opportunity to get involved in volunteer activities at Riksula.

Volunteering does not require any special skills from you - it is enough that you have the time to give. Learn about the different volunteering tasks here.

We will guide and support you in all situations you encounter. Your support is provided by volunteer coordinator Jemina Salonen. Volunteering is independent, but not lonely.

    As a volunteer, you can:

    • To meet different people and reduce loneliness
    • To decide for yourself how to use your time and in which context you work as a volunteer
    • To participate in current themed trainings related to volunteering
    • Part of a nice group of volunteers
    • To do something meaningful

Volunteering is good: meaningful activity refreshes, challenges and motivates to learn new things. In volunteering, you can develop your own skills, increase your experience and improve your work ability. You get to know new and nice people and you get to influence and act for the common good.
