Riihimäki has great outdoor and sports terrains where you can refresh yourself and improve your fitness all year round. We put together the city's most popular destinations on a map, where you can find your own, whether you want to ride a horse, skate, ski or just go for a run.

Sammalistonsuo

At the beginning of the 1900th century, the moss bog was cleared to become farmland for the Riihimäki prison and pasture land for animals. In the 1980s, the area came under the ownership of Vapo, which has had peat production in the area ever since. However, the moss bog is also an oasis for birds and bird watchers. Sammaliston's stables also operate in Sammalistonsu, with a riding school, stallion station and training for competitive riding.

The reef area

Riutta operated as a small skiing center until 2015. After that, the ski lifts stopped, but the area has continued to develop. Riutta has nature trails, ski slopes and an 18-hole Frisbee golf course. In addition, you can practice mountain biking in the area, as well as orienteering both traditionally and with the help of the MOBO application. You can also challenge your own fitness on the fitness stairs, which have 141 steps. In winter, the area is popular with snowboarders and skiers.

Sako field

Hirsimäki field goes by the name Sako field in the mouth of the people of Riihämäki. The field is an ordinary sports field with a stone ash surface behind Sako's factories, next to a small forest, where even the shot put ring is starting to wear out. But precisely because of this, it is one of the most peaceful places in the city for, say, running training or football. In winter, you can skate on the field and play ice hockey in the rink.

Central sports field

Riihimäki's central sports park is even an internationally interesting architectural destination. The general plan of the sports park was prepared by the architect Yrjö Lindgren in 1950. The area forms a harmonious whole with sports and football fields, a sports hall, a swimming pool and a land swimming pool. The short, but hilly, dirt track is a favorite destination for city joggers, and you can also play tennis on several courts. The sports hall has a bowling alley.

Garrison

In the territory of the Riihimäki garrison, there is a five-kilometer fitness track. Since the fitness course was created for conscripts, it has demanding ups and downs. In winter, the track has a ski track for skiers in both traditional and free style. The garrison area of Riihimäki itself is a historically significant area and belongs to the Finnish Museum Agency's nationally significant built cultural environments.

Hatlamminsuo

Hatlamminsuo is a nature reserve with a total of 40 different types of bogs. The area is definitely the most popular excursion and nature destinations in Riihimäki. It is easy to get to know the marsh area, for example with children along the long trees. Hatlamminsuo connects to Hatlamminmäki, where the 10-year-old shore of the Yoldian Sea is still visible. Hikers should know that Hatlamminmäki has a big hump. In winter, there is a ski slope in the area.

Käräjäkoski

Käräjäkoski is located on the eastern edge of Riihimäki. Käräjäkoski is a Vantaan river that starts in Hausjärvi and flows through Riihimäki. The Käräjäkoski nature trail is over a kilometer long, and in the summer you can also fish for trout in the area, which are both stocked and wild in the river. Part of the path is also suitable for people with reduced mobility and for use with prams. There are guide boards along the nature trail that help hikers better understand the nature of the area.

Peltosaari sports park

Peltosaari sports park is, along with the central sports park, the city's number one place to exercise. The area has a sports field, ice rinks, an archery range, training soccer fields and a baseball field. There are also several private sports operators nearby. The city's concrete skate park is located next to the ice rink. With children, you should also visit the apartment building area of Peltosaari, which has several playgrounds for children, as well as its own mini-sports court and basketball court, as well as an ice rink in winter.

Vahteristo Park

The Vahteristo nature reserve is located a couple of kilometers from the center of Riihimäki. The area has several nature trails and good jogging terrains, and of course the azalea park, a cooperation project between the University of Helsinki and the city of Riihimäki, where around 200 azaleas bloom in early June. In winter, Vahteristo has ski slopes for both traditional and free style. You can ski along the slopes all the way to Hyvinkää.

Mountain biking is suitable for all ages, and Riihimäki has great opportunities for the hobby

- Among cities with less than 40 inhabitants, Riihimäki is one of the busiest mountain biking municipalities in Finland, says mountain biker Ari Peltopuro of the hobby club Riihiladu.

What makes Riihimäki lively are the great terrains and active enthusiasts. Riihilatu organizes two guided bike runs a week during the summer and mountain biking events. The age distribution of cyclists on the runs is wide; the youngest cyclists have been 5 years old and the oldest close to 70 years old.

- Mountain biking is suitable for everyone who can control the bike on an uneven surface. If you don't have your own bike, you can borrow one from a bike rental company, and Riihiladu also has a few bikes to borrow, Peltopuro says.

There are hundreds of kilometers of mast cycling routes around Riihimäki.

- The purpose is to build marked routes to Riutta, unmarked routes can be found, for example, in Suonummi, Kirjaus near ABC and around Hatlamminsuo. Actually, the only area where cycling is not suitable is the Neva area.
