The city of Riihimäki has been doing climate work for a long time, since the early 1990s. The city joined the municipalities' climate protection campaign in 1998. In 2018, it changed to IlmastoKunnat, in which Riihimäki is still involved. Riihimäki's climate strategy 2020 "Towards a carbon-neutral Riihimäki" was approved in the fall of 2011 and merged with the environmental policy in August 2018.

As a pioneer municipality of the FISU network, Riihimäki is committed to aiming for in 2050:
- zero emissions
- zero waste
- globally sustainable consumption.
In addition, on September 27.9.2021, 2030, the Riihimäki City Council approved the following interim goals for XNUMX:
- 80% emission reduction by 2030 from the 2007 level
- the amount of household waste will decrease and the recycling rate will increase, reaching a level of 65% by 2030
- halving the consumption-based carbon footprint by 2030 from the 2005 level.

With the help of the environmental system, the entire city's activities aimed at saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are coordinated. It is based on the environmental policy of the city of Riihimäki, which is approved by the city council from time to time. Riihimäki's environmental policy "Resource Wise Riihimäki 2030" was approved by the city council in June 2022. Riihimäki is involved in the Municipal Energy Efficiency Agreement. The action plan of the energy efficiency agreement for the years 2017–2025 was approved by the city council on December 4.12.2017, XNUMX. Riihimäki has joined the municipalities' climate campaign by decision of the city board in 1998. In 2018, the climate campaign was changed to IlmastoKunnat activity in the Municipal Union.
