Forests

The city of Riihimäki owns a total of approximately 1049 hectares of forest, of which 449 hectares are classified as urban forest and approximately 600 hectares as economic forest. A new forest plan was completed for the city in 2021, which is valid until 2031. The plan guides the management of forests and it contains management recommendations by forest pattern for forests owned by the city.

Forests are managed with biodiversity, safety and recreational and landscape values in mind, regardless of whether the forest is classified as a recreational or commercial forest. We try to avoid clear-cutting, but for example, there is no other option in a forest badly destroyed by a book printer.

We react to forest destruction

The bookworm is a spruce pest, the damage it causes has become more common in Finland in recent years. In the forests of the city of Riihimäki, a letterpress has also been observed, and measures have been taken and will be taken to combat it. For example, in Räätykänmäki, south of Koppelintie, a 2023-hectare forest had to be cleared in the spring winter of 3,2 due to the destruction of the typewriter.

Decaying trees are left for the sake of biodiversity

In connection with forest management activities, the city of Riihimäki tries to leave rotting wood in the forest, either on the forest floor as ground wood or as artificial beech trees as vertical rotting wood. Depending on the location, either whole trees, crowns, branches or parts of the trunk can be left as rotten wood. Wood material of all sizes, such as rotting wood, is important for biodiversity. Different species of fungi begin to rot the wood left in the forest, insects use mushroom mycelium for food, and birds in turn peck insects for food.

Continuous cover forestry

In the next few years, we aim to implement the forest management plan in order of urgency. Picking, thinning and small-hole felling will be carried out, thus ensuring the birth of a new generation of trees in the forests. In this way, forests can be managed with continuous cover and clear cutting can be avoided. The aim is to diversify forests by planting and replanting different tree species, breaking one-sided tree species structures.
