Forests

The city of Riihimäki owns a total of approximately 1049 hectares of forest, of which 449 hectares are classified as urban forest and approximately 600 hectares as economic forest. A new forest plan was completed for the city in 2021, which is valid until 2031. The plan guides the management of forests and it contains management recommendations by forest pattern for forests owned by the city.

Forests are managed with biodiversity, safety and recreational and landscape values in mind, regardless of whether the forest is classified as a recreational or commercial forest. We try to avoid clear-cutting, but for example, there is no other option in a forest badly destroyed by a book printer.

We react to forest destruction

The bookworm is a spruce pest, the damage it causes has become more common in Finland in recent years. In the forests of the city of Riihimäki, a letterpress has also been observed, and measures have been taken and will be taken to combat it. For example, in Räätykänmäki, south of Koppelintie, a 2023-hectare forest had to be cleared in the spring winter of 3,2 due to the destruction of the typewriter.

Decaying trees are left for the sake of biodiversity

In connection with forest management activities, the city of Riihimäki tries to leave rotting wood in the forest, either on the forest floor as ground wood or as artificial beech trees as vertical rotting wood. Depending on the location, either whole trees, crowns, branches or parts of the trunk can be left as rotten wood. Wood material of all sizes, such as rotting wood, is important for biodiversity. Different species of fungi begin to rot the wood left in the forest, insects use mushroom mycelium for food, and birds in turn peck insects for food.

Continuous cover forestry

In the next few years, we aim to implement the forest management plan in order of urgency. Picking, thinning and small-hole felling will be carried out, thus ensuring the birth of a new generation of trees in the forests. In this way, forests can be managed with continuous cover and clear cutting can be avoided. The aim is to diversify forests by planting and replanting different tree species, breaking one-sided tree species structures.

Tell us your wishes in the feedback service

The city of Riihimäki's goal is to manage forests openly, taking into account the needs and wishes of the municipalities in the management of forests. The best way to influence and give feedback on forest management is In the feedback service of the city of Riihimäki.

Future measures

  • The city of Riihimäki will remove dangerous trees from the area demarcated on the map, forest pattern 382. The measure has a valid landscape work permit (694-2023-37).

In the green area between the road and the lots, there are several trees that are in poor condition and cause danger, which will be removed for safety reasons. The number of trees to be removed is approximately 10. In the western part of the area, the aim is to leave most of the trees standing, considering the risk of wind damage. In connection with the measure, a groundwood tree will be left on the site to promote biodiversity, and at the same time, small trees will be maintained. A supplement is implanted if necessary.

Estimated start date of the site in week 47.

  • The city of Riihimäki is carrying out forest management measures in the area delineated on the map, forest patterns 581, 582, 580 and 584.

581 – Small stand maintenance/thinning. A naturally born dense seedling.

582 – Picking felling. Spruce trees killed by the printer. The purpose of selective logging is to open up growth space for a new generation of trees.

580, 584 – Thinning. Thinning aims to take care of a forest that has grown dense.

The measures are carried out as logging and the timber is driven out of the forest mechanically. In connection with the measure, groundwood will be left in the forest to promote biodiversity.

Estimated start date of the site in week 47.

  • The city of Riihimäki carries out forest management measures according to the forest management plan for the area delineated on the map, forest pattern 609.

The pattern implements thinning, which aims to create growth space in dense stands. Half of the pattern with heavy consumption during school breaks, so the measures are done during the school holidays.

The measures are carried out as logging and the timber is driven out of the forest mechanically. In connection with the measure, groundwood will be left in the forest to promote biodiversity.

Estimated start date of the site in week 52.

Completed construction sites

  • In the forest of the central sports park, small-scale forest management was carried out. The purpose of the measure was to prevent the park from becoming crowded and to keep the landscapes open. At the same time, the area was checked for dangerous trees.

In the management of small stands, precious trees were preferred and efforts were made to leave as many different tree species as possible to develop under the main stand. The twigs resulting from the procedure were left in the forest to rot and release nutrients to the forest floor.

The site was implemented in week 36.
