Protected natural habitats

Riihimäki has five protected habitat types. All sites are hardwood forests. The sites are small and their total area is 4,1 hectares.

  • Hirvijärvi's Suntinniemi hardwood forest
  • The linden area of Pojansilla, located south of Vähäjärvi
  • Hirvijärvi's Keinusaari linden area
  • Korttionmäki linden areas (three separate areas)
  • Hirvijärvi's Lintunoka linden area

In addition, in Riihimäki, the Pähkinistönmäki hardwood forest has been inventoried (area 8 ha), which meets the criteria of the Nature Conservation Act, but its protection decision has not yet been issued.

In Kanta- and Päijät-Hämee, the Häme ELY Center decides on the demarcation and protection of habitat types.

Nature types are land or water areas with certain environmental conditions and a characteristic plant and animal species. The creation of the nature type is influenced, among other things, by soil and bedrock as well as water conditions and microclimate. Nature types are protected in order to safeguard natural diversity and preserve species' habitats.
