Traffic planning
Traffic planning is part of land use planning, which is based on the development needs of the entire city. The urban environment planning service area of the Technical domain is responsible for traffic general planning and more detailed plans.
Traffic planning is based on various surveys and studies, including the calculation of traffic volumes and speeds, studies of transportation methods (for example, what proportion are motorists, pedestrians or cyclists), classification of the traffic environment (lott streets, collector streets and main streets) and traffic surveys that estimate future traffic volumes. The design must take into account the safety and smoothness of all access routes.
Traffic signs are presented in the traffic control plan, and it is always drawn up in connection with new street plans or changes to street plans, if the traffic signs in the environment change.

The plan serves as a background study of the general planning, where land use traffic issues are planned and analyzed in more detail, such as traffic network structuring, connection and space needs, network load and functionality, and the order of implementation of new thoroughfares is evaluated.

The traffic plan for the center of Riihimäki was drawn up by the street and park unit of the city's technical center. The main factor in the work was increasing the attractiveness and improving the availability of parking spaces, as well as mapping out how to increase the comfort and attractiveness of the city center by means of traffic planning. The work focused on the development of the city center's transport network and especially the central shopping streets. The goal was to increase the comfort of doing business in the center in such a way that good availability of services is secured. In addition, the possibilities of reducing through traffic in the city center were examined.

The goal of the update of the school traffic safety report prepared for the city of Riihimäki is to map the traffic safety in the vicinity of the city's elementary schools and the development needs of traffic arrangements. The work has examined the state of the schools' surroundings and the traffic accidents that occurred in the vicinity of the schools between 2007 and 2010. In addition, the work has mapped the measures affecting traffic safety that have been carried out since the previous traffic safety survey, and new proposals for measures have been brought forward.

The plan presents the target state of Riihimäki's transport network for the year 2040. The central area will be developed in such a way that the urban environment supports a comfortable living environment and sustainable movement in accordance with the city's strategic goals, directing passing car traffic mainly to the central ring and other main thoroughfares in accordance with the central vision. In addition to the central area, the plan defines measures for the development of the entrance roads to Riihimäki. The starting point for the development of the entrance roads is to develop the service level of the connections so that the main thoroughfares outside the city center are competitive connections from the perspective of heavy traffic and traffic using the street network of the city center.

A safe and sustainable movement plan was prepared for the municipalities of Hausjärvi, Hyvinkää, Lope and Riihimäki. The plan was drawn up in cooperation with the Uusimaa ELY center and the municipalities in the planning area. The plan was drawn up from the point of view of sustainable mobility and it includes, in addition to improving safety, the promotion of sustainable mobility.

The aim of Riihimäki's sustainable movement plan is to promote sustainable forms of movement in trips within the city and outside the city, taking into account ecological, economic and social sustainability and all age groups.
The purpose of the plan is to guide and provide tools for the development of sustainable mobility in Riihimäki. It presents the current situation, presents the vision and goals of Riihimäki's sustainable movement, as well as concrete and implementable measures for different modes of transportation to achieve the goals.

The regional guidance plan for the service areas of the Hyvinkään-Riihimäki economic area has been drawn up in cooperation with the Uusimaa ELY Center, the Pirkanmaa ELY Center, and the municipalities of the region.

Riihimäki's traffic report 2035 proposes directing through traffic to VI Oksanen street to improve traffic safety and living comfort in Erkyläntie (Mäkinen, Backman & Korpinen 2011). Based on traffic calculations, drive-through research and various functionality reviews, the plan presents development proposals to solve the area's problem areas. The results are used to justify and illustrate the solutions presented in the plan.
