Sustainable movement
In Riihimäki, significant investments are being made in the urban environment in order to increase the share of sustainable ways of transportation. In support of the former, Riihimäki has started the preparation of a Sustainable Mobility Plan at the beginning of 2021, in which it is hoped that residents will actively participate. Sustainable movement means environmentally and socially favorable modes of transportation that are economical, smooth, safe and improve the health of the person moving.
The primary modes of sustainable movement are walking, cycling and public transport. Efforts are also being made to promote these in the transport system. Even when using a car, you should prefer more sustainable methods such as the possibility of sharing cars, carpooling, utilizing travel chains and economical driving. When choosing a car, it is good to take into account the low consumption and driving force of the vehicle and prefer, for example, an electric car.

The goal is to draw up a comprehensive sustainable mobility plan for Riihimäki, where the presented measures are concrete and implementable. The aim of the plan is to promote sustainable forms of movement in the inner city and out-of-city trips, taking into account ecological, economic and social sustainability and all age groups.
The purpose of the plan is to guide and provide tools for the development of sustainable mobility in Riihimäki. And it is intended to be drawn up in broad cooperation with the city's various administrative municipalities and several stakeholders, of which the residents are the most significant group.

Residents play an important role in drawing up the plan. A sustainable mobility survey was organized for the residents, which received more than 1100 responses. You can read more about the results of the survey here.
Eleven residents of Riihimäki signed up for the Riihimäki sustainable movement residents' council. A webinar was organized for them, which mapped out the board's views and experiences on various issues related to sustainable mobility, such as walking and cycling routes, access parking, city bikes, public transport and private cars. Ideas and thoughts were collected from Raati residents on how to make Riihimäki a pioneer in sustainable mobility.

In addition to experts and residents from the city's various administrative councils, representatives of Uusimaa's Business, Transport and Environment Center, Häme liito, Liikenneturva, the police and HAMK participate in drawing up the plan. The city of Riihimäki receives Traficom's Sustainable Mobility state grant for the plan. The consultant preparing the plan is Destia Oy.

The preparation of the sustainable mobility plan started in January 2021 and was completed in September 2021.
