Riihimäki Power Plant

The city of Riihimäki is developing the old power plant property next to the railway station into a new cultural and events center.

Voimala is a red brick building complex of approximately 5 square meters in size, which serves as a landmark of the Riihimäki station area. It is located at Paloheimonkatu 000, 2 Riihimäki, with excellent transport links.

The former power plant is intended to be transformed into a center for culture and experiences. Future visitors to the power plant will include music, culture and design lovers, for example. When completed, the power plant will make a significant addition to the cultural offering of the Riihimäki region. The building, which is of cultural and historical value, offers a unique setting for diverse experiences. Riihimäki is already known for its active cultural scene.

The power plant has been planned to have four floors, of which the street level is open to everyone, and is mainly non-commercial space. The city has held negotiations with actors from various fields about the location of the power plant. As the planning progressed, the functions of museums and a business center, as well as restaurants and cinema halls, have been outlined for the power plant. The aim is to build a 1000-person multi-purpose hall for the power plant, suitable for concerts and other performing arts as well as events. In addition to this center of experiences, several smaller halls are also planned, for example suitable for cinemas or museum activities.

In 2022-23, the concept of the Power Plant was developed with the support of the European Commission's New Bauhaus Initiative. The work emphasized the values ​​of the EU program: sustainable development, aesthetics and inclusion. The city presented the future operating concepts of the Power Plant, prepared in collaboration with YIT and the consulting firms Ramboll, Pink Eminence and No Fear Agency, at the Voimala Soi event organized in June 2023. The concepts were based on feedback from city residents and stakeholders.
