HAMK's Riihimäki campus project
Riihimäki is being developed as a compact quarter town around the station and the city center. The Riihimäki campus of Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) will move from Kaartokatu to the Travel Center next to the train station in early 2028. The new campus will affect the development of the entire Riihimäki station area.
After the renovation and expansion, a modern learning environment for approximately 2,000 students will be built in the area. The new facilities are comfortable, inspiring and support encounters and interaction between different functions. In addition to teaching facilities, the Riihimäki campus has facilities for research, development and innovation activities.
New facilities to be completed in 2028
HAMK purchased the lower part of the Matkakeskus property, the Liikerada premises, in June 2025. The city of Riihimäki initiated a change to the campus's local plan in spring 2026. At the same time, the university of applied sciences is planning new premises and preparing construction. The actual implementation phase of the campus renovation and expansion will be in 2027. According to current estimates, the new premises will be available in early 2028. HAMK's current premises on Kaartokatu will be transferred to Hyria.
A timeline
- 2026: Design of new facilities and preparation for construction.

- 2028: New facilities ready at the beginning of the year, students welcome.
- 2028: Hyria's operations will move to HAMK's former premises.
The new campus is easy to reach from all over Finland.
The more central location at the railway station will enhance the campus's attractiveness. The new campus is very easy to reach by bus and train. Riihimäki railway station is served by, for example, long-distance InterCity and Pendolino trains, as well as commuter trains from Helsinki, Tampere and Lahti.
The new campus is located at Eteläinen Asemakatu 2 (Travel Center).
Getting around the city by bike or on foot is easy in a densely built city with a small area.
Engineering training available
The Riihimäki campus of Häme University of Applied Sciences offers engineering education in Finnish and English. The campus also houses the HAMK Tech research unit. Students at Riihimäki study, among other things, mechanical engineering, transportation, information and communication technology, and future transportation systems.
The campus has approximately 1,700 students and employs over 70 people. HAMK aims to increase its student population in Riihimäki to 2,000 students.
HAMK plays a key role in Riihimäki, among other things, in the Define ecosystem in the defense and security sector and in robotics education. The city of Riihimäki is supporting the campus project with 7,5 million euros.
Häme University of Applied Sciences works closely with Hyria Education and Riihimäki Upper Secondary School, which are located in Riihimäki. The schools have signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of further developing student services. In practice, cooperation means, for example, joint studies, projects and services.
