Since the construction site returned from the Christmas break at the beginning of January, work has progressed mainly on the stormwater pumping station. On Monday, a detour section was put into use at the Prisma junction so that the stormwater arrangements in the intersection area can be built. The duration of the detour arrangements depends to some extent on the impact of road conditions on the progress of the work, because in severe frosts, frost has a slowing effect on the progress of that phase. The preliminary estimate for the detour arrangement is 1-2 weeks.

This week has been an exciting and interesting time at the Jokikylä construction site, as both new bridges crossing the Vantaanjoki River have arrived at the construction site. The Kanavakatu vehicle bridge arrived in parts and was assembled on site on top of the ground supports. The pedestrian bridge, on the other hand, arrived at the site as a complete special transport and was lifted into place with a single lift. The bridges ultimately arrived three weeks behind schedule due to delays in the delivery of parts.

Traffic light control has been introduced on Eteläinen Asemakatu due to construction site arrangements, as the construction of stormwater systems has progressed to the second phase, where a stormwater settling basin and a screen well will be built. The structures are located very close to the roadway, so for this reason, one lane of the roadway has been taken out of use and used as a protection and work area for the construction site. The work phase will include trenches supported by steel sheets and piling, so some noise and vibration-causing work phases are expected again.

The work has progressed considerably during the summer and the new riverbed of the Vantaanjoki River was also put into use on 27.8 August. In connection with the introduction of the new riverbed, a search for possible river mussels was carried out in the old riverbed in accordance with the authorities' requirements. No mussels were found in the abandoned riverbed, but juvenile eel and lamprey were found. In addition, the contractor also rescued a large trout from the old riverbed. All found animals and organisms have been transferred to continue their lives in the new riverbed.

Currently, the planting of the embankments of the new riverbed, the work on the concrete structures of the stormwater pumping station and the construction of the new Kanavakatu are underway. In addition, work has begun today on cleaning the old riverbed before filling it in. The earth supports of the bridges are already ready, with finishing touches, and are waiting for the new bridges to arrive during the autumn holiday week.

The work in Jokikylä is progressing at a rapid pace and the new bed of the Vantaanjoki River has already begun to form in the middle of the area. The ongoing work phases include stabilization work of the new bed, excavation and landscaping work of the new bed, construction of ground supports for new bridges and construction of a new stormwater pumping station, where the concrete casting of the base slab is currently underway. According to the water permit, work that causes water to become cloudy is permitted between 1.6 and 31.8., and the ongoing work phases will indeed cause turbidity in the water. Efforts have been made to mitigate the effects of turbidity on the construction site with various solutions, the most visible of which is certainly the “silt curtain” at the mouth of the Eteläinen Asemakatu pipe bridge. The curtain is intended to limit the worst turbidity to the work area, but when the water level rises during rain, the water will of course flow over the curtain, causing more turbidity. According to the preliminary schedule estimate, the Vantaanjoki River will move to a new channel at the end of August, after which the filling of the old river channel will begin.

Work began in Jokikylä in January with the establishment of the construction site and preliminary work. As the weather conditions became more favorable, the actual work on the site also began. Stabilization work was carried out with two machine units during the spring and the work is progressing at a good pace. The piling work is now complete, as the stormwater pumping station, the landing basin, the ground supports of the Kanavakatu bridge and the ground supports of the light traffic bridge on the park route have been piled. Progress has also been made in front of the Veturi Office Centre, as the sheet pile excavation for the new stormwater pumping station has reached the excavation depth of the lowest support level. The construction of the last support levels in the trench is currently underway, after which excavation will continue to the lowest excavation level. Concrete work for the bridge ground supports will begin next week.

  • The Peltosaari park complex will be renovated in 2026-2027. The park will include new play and recreation areas for users of different ages. A fenced play area will be built for younger children, and space-themed climbing and play equipment will be built for older children. The park will offer an outdoor gym and basketball court for adults and young people, and a separate fitness center is planned for seniors. Community will be increased by building gathering places, such as a new square that will expand to the north of Telluskatu at the market square.

In addition to versatile seating areas and a performance stage, the new square is planned to house the already acquired sculptures. The park's vegetation will be diversified, and special attention will be paid to open views and pleasant, safe routes, as well as improved lighting. The construction emphasizes greenery, diverse vegetation, sustainable stormwater solutions, and highlighting the history of the area.

The section of Telluskatu that runs alongside the park will be completely renovated in conjunction with the construction of the park. The section will remain for pedestrian and cycling use and will be designed to be compatible with the park area and square in terms of overall appearance.

For more information about the design, contact city gardener Päivi Sundman (tel. 040 485 9622, paivi.sundman@riihimaki.fi)

For more information, contact the developer responsible for the construction, Anniina Aho (tel. 040 330 4925, anniina.aho2@riihimaki.fi).

  • Kauppakatu will be completely renovated between Hämeenkatu and Valtakatu. In connection with the renovation, the accessibility of Kauppakatu will be improved and a separated sidewalk and cycle path will be implemented.

The street is one of the busiest streets in the city center, and it also connects the streets in the city center area to each other. There are many pedestrians and cyclists on the street. Kauppakatu is an area with a special level of accessibility defined for the city center area. Construction work will begin after the Wilderness Fair. The site is a joint project with Riihimäen Vesi.

In connection with the basic improvement of Kauppakatu, a basic improvement of the street structures of Valtakatu will also be carried out on the section between Kauppakatu and Keskuskatu by repairing the leveling and drainage, renewing the pavement and making the necessary curb repairs.

For more information, contact the developer responsible for the construction, Anniina Aho (tel. 040 330 4925, anniina.aho2@riihimaki.fi).

  • The Kulmala Puistokatu pedestrian and cycling connection is a pedestrian and cycling route running alongside a busy main street. Currently, the route is inseparable from the roadway.

The walking and cycling space will be structurally demarcated from the roadway, and at the same time, drainage, lighting, and the visibility and safety of the pedestrian crossing at the Paloheimonkatu intersection will be improved.

For more information, contact the developer responsible for the construction, Anniina Aho (tel. 040 330 4925, anniina.aho2@riihimaki.fi).

  • The energy efficiency of street lighting will be increased by replacing mercury lamps with energy-saving LED lamps. At the same time, lighting structures in poor condition will be renewed. The aim of replacing lamps is to reduce the electricity costs of street lighting.
