City center master plan

The City of Riihimäki has initiated the preparation of a master plan and planning principles for the city centre. The work will consider the future of the city centre area from many different perspectives: mobility, pleasant urban spaces, services, the vitality of the city centre, and culture and events. When completed, the master plan will guide more detailed land use planning, such as changes to the town plan and the preparation of street and park plans. This is a multidisciplinary work that combines different areas of planning. The preparation of the master plan and planning principles for the city centre is being carried out by the architectural firm INARO, with partners Kaskas Media, Finnmap Infra and Realidea. The work is being carried out under the guidance of the city.

Objectives and schedule of the work

The work outlines what the city centre will look like and how it will function as an urban environment in the future. The purpose of the work is to define a more specific target state for the development of Riihimäki city centre than the vision of the station area and the city centre. The aim is that the design principles and solutions, when implemented, will produce a high-quality cityscape that supports Riihimäki's identity as a glass city. The work will implement the city's strategy, which aims to make Riihimäki an irresistible city of fifteen minutes. The project will be completed for decision by the city council in February 2027.

Participation

The city center is important for both current and future residents of Riihimäki. The work is done together with residents, experts, decision-makers and stakeholders. Together, we want to create guidelines for an attractive city center, a meeting place and common living room for all Riihimäki residents, which is why we need you to join us in the work!

In April 2026, we held the project's first participatory workshops, inviting city residents of all ages, stakeholders and decision-makers. The stakeholders included entrepreneurs, property owners and cultural actors. The discussions at the workshops have been published summary.

In autumn 2026, the consultation phase for the draft master plan and planning principles will be held in co-development. At that time, we will organize a workshop open to all city residents, where Riihimäki residents will be able to discuss and brainstorm on the topic based on the drafts. We will inform you about the workshop date in more detail later – please follow the project website and city communications! However, if you wish, you can contact us at any time, our contact information can be found below.
