Accessible Riihimäki

The City of Riihimäki is mapping the accessibility of its facilities. Data exists currently for, among others, the Finnish Glass Museum, the Sports Hall, the swimming pool and the library.

Accessibility refers to taking all types of people into account in the physical environment, such as in the design and implementation of the built environment and in the provision of services, so that every individual, regardless of age, gender, health status, and social, mental, or physical functioning, can function in the environment and use services.

Accessibility is not just about freedom of movement, but also takes into account issues such as seeing, hearing, understanding and communication. An accessible and safe environment strengthens the well-being of residents and the functioning of society as a whole.

Accessibility of digital environments

Accessibility often refers to digital environments. The accessibility of digital environments, such as websites, takes into account that everyone is equally able to use the sites and understand their content.

Accessible environments, together with accessible services, usable tools and understandable information, enable equal inclusion.

An accessibility survey was conducted for the Riihimäki Summer Theatre in spring 2024, based on which accessibility information about the theatre has been produced.

Arrival and entrances

The Summer Theatre is located at Penttilänkatu 3, Riihimäki.

There are no marked accessible parking spaces in the parking area. With a disabled parking permit, you can park in public areas despite any prohibition or restriction indicated by a traffic sign. Escort traffic has space to stop in front of the entrance, near the ticket office.

Services

The courtyard area has ticket sales, accessible areas, toilets and the Väliaika Laitinen sales point on one level. All of these are accessible with an assistive device.

The grandstand is elevated. There are stairs to other than accessible seating areas.

There are six accessible seats on the platform. A freestanding chair can also be placed on the platform.

The Summer Theatre uses an induction loop at ticket sales and throughout the auditorium.

Accessible toilet

There is one accessible toilet in the summer theatre. The toilet facilities are located next to the ticket office.

The width of the door of an accessible toilet is at least 85 centimeters. There is at least 150 centimeters of free space in the toilet for turning with an assistive device. There is at least 80 centimeters of free space on the right side of the toilet seat for moving. The support rails of the toilet seat are attached to the floor. There is at least 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

Arrival and entrances

The library is located at Kauppakatu 16, Riihimäki.

There is no parking area on site, but there is street parking next to the library. There is one accessible parking space on the street, located on Kauppakatu. The main entrance to the library is about 10 meters from the accessible parking space. The access road to the entrance is a flat dirt road, which changes to asphalt closer to the entrance.

There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the main entrance.

The entrance is at street level. The clear width of the entrance door is approximately 82 centimeters and the doorway has a threshold of just over 2 centimeters. The clear width of the wind cabinet door is approximately 79 centimeters and the doorway has a threshold of approximately 2,5 centimeters. The entrance doors have electric opening mechanisms.

Interiors and services

There are three customer service points in the library: one is located downstairs on the right side of the entrance and two upstairs, the closest of which is on the right when taking the elevator.

The library is accessible to all parts of the building by wheelchair. There is one elevator in the building, located in the lobby on the first floor. The elevator door opens automatically and the dimensions of the elevator car are 102 centimeters x 152 centimeters.

There is a height-adjustable borrowing and return point on the first floor. On the second floor there is an accessible lending machine that is sized for wheelchair users.

The library has good general lighting. There are no induction loops in the library premises.

Accessible toilet

The library has one accessible toilet, located on the second floor of the library. There is an elevator to the second floor and the toilet is located to the left of the elevator door. The toilet has at least 150 centimeters of free space for turning with an assistive device and there is at least 80 centimeters of transition space on both sides of the toilet seat. The handrails are attached to the wall and there is at least 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

Arrival

There are two accessible parking spaces in the high school parking area. The parking spaces are not marked with vertical signs, but there is a wheelchair symbol on the surface of the spaces. The parking area is located behind the high school. The accessible parking spaces are approximately 40 meters from the entrance on Koulukatu. The path leading from the parking area to the entrance is flat and asphalted. There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the entrances.

Entrances

The upper secondary school is located at Koulukatu 5, Riihimäki. The main entrance is on the Hämeenkatu side. There is another entrance on the Koulukatu side, which can be accessed either from the parking area in the backyard or from the Koulukatu side.

There is a platform in front of the main entrance, which is reached by a 4-centimeter-high threshold. The clear width of the main entrance door is at least 85 centimeters, and the clear width of the wind closet door is also at least 85 centimeters, but there is a 3-centimeter-high threshold in the doorway. The doors do not have electric opening mechanisms.

The entrance on the Koulukatu side has double doors, one of which is 70 centimeters wide. The doorway has a two-part threshold about 6 centimeters high. The wind closet also has double doors, and the free width of one door is 77 centimeters and the doorway has a threshold 2,5 centimeters high. The doors do not have electric opening mechanisms.

Interiors and services

The building is accessible with assistive device, but some areas are accessible with stair climbers. Stair climbers are required to access the auditorium, the first-floor corridor to the north lobby, and the music classroom entrance to the classroom. The auditorium door has a 6-centimeter-high threshold.

The building has one elevator, located near the entrance lobby on Koulukatu. The elevator door opens automatically, and the dimensions of the elevator car are 100 centimeters x 148 centimeters.

There are no induction loops in the high school premises.

Accessible toilet

The upper secondary school has two accessible toilets, both of which are on the first floor. One accessible toilet is located in the corridor at the corner of the elevator and the group work space, and the other is located in the auditorium. Both toilets have a minimum of 150 centimeters of space for turning with an assistive device, and there is a minimum of 80 centimeters of space for moving on both sides of the toilet seats. The handrails are fixed to the floor. For the toilet next to the auditorium, the 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat is only partially implemented.

There is accessible street parking next to the Museum center on Jarrumiehenkatu. Accessible parking spaces are not marked with vertical signs.

The distance from the parking spaces to the entrance is approximately 20 meters. The path leading from the street to the entrance has a slope and the surface of the path is asphalted.

There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the entrance.

The entrance is at street level. The doors to the entrance and the wind closet are at least 85 centimeters wide. The doors do not have an electric opening mechanism.

The building has ticket sales, a museum shop, exhibition spaces and toilets.

When you reach the main lobby from the entrance, the ticket office is located immediately to the left of the lobby. There is a museum shop next to the ticket office in the lobby.

The museum has accessible access to different parts of the building with an assistive device. There is an elevator in the building, which is located on the right behind the glass door, next to the staircase, when walking from the entrance. The elevator door must be opened manually and the dimensions of the elevator car are: dimensions to be added here, the elevator was broken during the survey visit.

The museum has different exhibitions and the size and placement of the exhibition texts vary. The premises have good general lighting.

There are no induction loops in the museum premises.

Accessible toilet

The museum has one accessible toilet, located on the first floor of the museum on the right side of the lobby, next to the coat racks. The toilet door is 90 centimeters wide. There is approximately 150 centimeters of free space in the toilet for turning around with a mobility aid. There is at least 80 centimeters of transition space on both sides of the toilet seat. The handrails are attached to the wall. There is approximately 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

Arrival

There is one accessible parking space in the parking area. When you reach the parking area from Tehtaankatu, the accessible parking space is located at the left end of the parking area. The main entrance to the museum is approximately 75 meters from the accessible parking space. The walkway leading from the parking area to the main entrance has a slope and is asphalted.

By arrangement, you can park your car closer to the main entrance. This can be arranged with the museum's customer service. There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the main entrance.

Entrances

The main entrance to the Glass Museum is at Tehtaankatu 23, Riihimäki. When you reach the courtyard from the parking area, the entrance to the restaurant is on the right, followed by the main entrance, which leads to the museum premises. The museum premises include a ticket office, a museum shop, exhibition spaces, a conference room and toilets. There is one accessible toilet in the entire building, which is located next to the ticket office.

The main entrance has a ramp and steps. The ramp is gentle, with a maximum gradient of 8 percent, and there is a handrail on one side of the ramp. There is no contrasting stripe on the front edge of the steps and the handrail is only on one side of the stairs. The width of the entrance door is at least 85 centimeters. The doorway has a threshold of approximately 3–4 centimeters. The entrance door does not have an electric opening mechanism and the door is difficult to open.

Barrier-free access to the café is from the outside. The café entrance has a ramp and stairs. The ramp is gentle, with a maximum gradient of 8 percent. There are no handrails on either side of the ramp. There is no contrast stripe on the front edge of the steps and the handrail is only on one side of the stairs. The width of the entrance door is at least 85 centimeters. There is a threshold of approximately 3–4 centimeters in the doorway. The entrance door does not have an electric opening mechanism and the door is difficult to open. You can use the knocker on the door to ask customer service for help with heavy doors if necessary.

Interiors and services

When you reach the main lobby from the main entrance, the ticket office is located immediately to the right of the lobby. In addition to the ticket office, the lobby also has a museum shop and wheelchairs and strollers for rent.

The building has one elevator, located in the exhibition areas. The elevator door must be opened manually and the dimensions of the elevator car are 98 centimeters x 110 centimeters.

The Glass Museum is wheelchair accessible and all three floors are accessible by elevator, but the loft above the museum shop on the second floor is only accessible by stairs. There are four steps from the second floor to the loft.

The exhibition spaces on the first floor are dimly lit. The museum has different exhibitions and the size and placement of the exhibition texts vary.

There are no induction loops in the Glass Museum premises.

Accessible toilet

The Glass Museum has one accessible toilet, located on the first floor behind the ticket office. The toilet does not meet current accessibility requirements.

The width of the toilet door is 87 centimeters. The toilet has about 80–90 centimeters of free space for turning with an assistive device. When viewed from the door, there is about 58 centimeters of transition space on the left side of the toilet seat. There is no transition space on the right side. The handrails are attached to the wall. There is about 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

Additional information

A person using an assistive device or requiring an assistant buys a regular ticket to the museum. The assistant is always admitted free of charge with the person being assisted. The assistant policy also applies to interpreters. Assistance and guide dogs are welcome.

The museum's pedagogical equipment, which includes touchable glass objects, is available for guided tours and can be requested in advance when booking a guide.

An accessibility survey was conducted for the Uramo school and daycare center in spring 2024, based on which accessibility information for the site has been produced, especially from the perspective of the sports facilities and the council hall.

Arrival

There are a total of four accessible parking spaces in the yard of Uramo School and Daycare. Two of the accessible parking spaces are located in the parking lot, which is approximately 100 meters from the main entrance.

The other two accessible parking spaces are located next to the entrance (E-stairs) at the back of the building, which is used to access the building in the evening.

There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the entrances.

Entrances

The main entrance to the Uramo school and daycare building is at Uramontie 63, Riihimäki. The building has several separate entrances on the daycare and school sides, as well as a separate entrance for evening use.

The front of the main entrance (A-stairs) is gently sloping and has a separate area marked off as a ramp, with handrails on both sides. There are no stairs at the main entrance. The width of the entrance door is at least 85 centimeters. The entrance doors do not have an electric opening mechanism.

The entrance (E-stairs) at the back of the building is for evening use and has a ramp and steps. The ramp is gentle, with a maximum gradient of 8 percent. There are handrails on both sides of the ramp. The stairs do not have handrails and the steps do not have contrasting stripes. The width of the entrance door is at least 85 centimeters. The entrance doors do not have an electric opening mechanism.

Interiors and services

The first floor houses the facilities for kindergarten, preschool and grades 1–3, as well as the canteen. The first floor also houses the gym and changing rooms, two of which have accessible toilets. The second floor houses the facilities for grades 4–5, special education and administration.

The cafeteria will be transformed into a council chamber/auditorium by arranging furniture.

There is barrier-free access to different parts of Uramo School and Daycare with an assistive device. The building has one elevator. When you enter the building from the main entrance, the elevator is located on the left in the lobby. The dimensions of the elevator car are at least 110 centimeters x 140 centimeters.

There are no induction loops in Uramo.

Accessible toilet

There are four accessible toilets in Uramo, two of which are located in the changing rooms. There are also accessible toilets on the first and second floors.

The door width of the accessible toilet on the first floor is 90 centimeters. The toilet has at least 150 centimeters of free space for turning with an assistive device. There is at least 80 centimeters of free space on both sides of the toilet seat for moving. The toilet seat's support rails are attached to the wall. There is at least 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

The door to the accessible toilet on the second floor is 90 centimeters wide. The toilet has at least 1,5 meters of free space for turning with a wheelchair. There is at least 80 centimeters of free space on both sides of the toilet seat for moving. The toilet seat's handrails are attached to the wall. There is at least 20 centimeters of free space behind the toilet seat.

The accessible toilets in the changing rooms are equivalent in terms of accessibility to the toilets on the first and second floors.

There is one accessible parking space in the immediate vicinity of the main entrance. The surface of the passageway leading from the accessible parking space to the main entrance is asphalted. There is space for escort vehicles to stop in front of the main entrance.

The main entrance has a ramp and steps. The ramp is long and has a fairly gentle slope, with a gradient of 10 percent. There are handrails on both sides of the ramp and steps. There is no contrasting stripe on the front edges of the steps.

The entrance doors are at least 85 centimeters wide and have an electric opening mechanism.

Interiors

The sports hall has a gymnasium, a gym, a powerlifting room, a meeting room, a bowling alley and a café. There is no customer service point in the sports hall. Currently, the sports hall does not have accessible changing rooms and washrooms for customer use. Accessible seats in the stands are located on the side of the field and the space is always furnished according to the event.

The building has one elevator, located in the lobby of the main entrance, immediately to the left as you enter the building. The elevator door is 87 centimeters wide and has an electric opening mechanism. The dimensions of the elevator car are 108 centimeters x 138 centimeters.

There is barrier-free access to various parts and functions of the sports center with an assistive device.

There are no induction loops in the sports hall.
